The objects are linked to the glamorous fashion again. Whether its jewelry, cars, diamonds, handbags, champagne and watches, all manufacturers of luxury goods have been recovered from the worst of the recession and record profits for the recovery both globally and by market expansion in China.
A good example is the Swiss watch company Swatch, which took in the first half a 54.4 percent increase in net earnings over the same period of 2009. Group sales, which include brands such as Blanc pain or Brogue, in turn, grew 22 percent to 3.030 billion francs (2.900 billion).
Despite the strong Swiss franc, the country’s watch exports increased 19.7 percent in the first six months of 2010, according to the federation of Swiss watchmakers.
In addition, Swatch benefits are not an isolated case, but in line with results reported by other companies like Bulgaria jewelry specializing in Italian or French Hermes International, which doubled in half its sales forecast for the year after reporting a rise from 27 percent in the second quarter.
Bulgaria, based in Rome, returned to profit in the second quarter with a net profit of 600,000 euros after posting 11.2 million euros in losses a year earlier.
The biggest luxury goods group in the world, France’s LVMH, which counts among its brands the Givens fashion, suitcases and handbags of Louis Vinton and Dom Paragon champagne, announced last month an increase of 53 percent of its half-yearly profits to 1.050 billion euros.
The beverage division of LVMH, which includes champagne brand Verve Aliquot, grew by 21 percent in the half.
Another company was successful diamond producer De Beers, which reported an 84 percent increase in sales of rough stones, up to 2.600 million, mainly driven by demand from Asia.
Just a year ago, luxury goods were struggling to survive amid the worst crisis since the Great Recession. A good example were the producers of high-end cars, they saw away its key markets in Europe and the U.S…
However, second quarter results of companies with luxury models like BMW, Mercedes Benz and Audi show that the sector has moved beyond the crisis.
BMW had net earnings in the second quarter of 834 million euros (versus 121 million in the same period of 2009) thanks to the demand for luxury vehicles in the U.S. and China. In addition, the same trend moved the German Mercedes-Benz and Audi.
Daimler, the parent of Mercedes-Benz, announced that it increased its operating profit forecast for 2010, after the Group increased its sales 19 percent in the second quarter, to 342,000 vehicles, the highest in its history.
Therefore, many luxury goods manufacturers are optimistic over the next six months. “We expect a solid result for the second half of 2010 in terms of both sales and profits,” said Swatch, which still operates as a family business, in a statement.
However, in view of concerns about the possible slowdown in global economic growth, other companies such as De Beers were more cautious. “We watched the remainder of 2010 with caution and optimism,” said the firm.
